Yesterday's Treat(s)

Yesterday while having breakfast we were watching a cocky having his.

And then, having finally got all the bulbs that have been delivered in the ground, we had an outing.  And went somewhere I love.

Lake Burley Griffin is about half an hours drive from us and there are frequently greedy swans and kangaroos to be seen.  So we packed some bread up, took my camera and headed off.

We were mugged.  They couldn't get to us or the bread fast enough and were not gentle taking food from fingers.  The swans appeared to be the bully boys and were not letting the magpies, crows or moor hens get any food.  And when we threw it further away the swans chased after it, honking indignantly.  I think at one stage we were surrounded by eight swans.

And then we wandered about 100 yards away to this:

I think that only cats relax more thoroughly than kangaroos.   And I am so often grateful to live in the bush capital and have treats like this readily available.

  1. that's my idea of a wonderful post. I love critters.
Am very familiar with Ballarat's swans and I got a bully boy by the neck once - very skinny was the surprise. that thick look is all feathers.

Years ago a silly friend thought a spring wedding by the lake in Melbournes Botanic Gardens would be good but we were all terrorised by swans protecting their cygnets from vicious Attack Brides.

  2. What a beautiful outing - it quite brought a tear to my eye. I miss all of those animals. Though we do have swans here and they are just as pushy, even though you'd expect something so beautiful to have matching manners. I love the way they strut along with that "tough guy" swagger. They always remind me of a group of bikies turning up to gate crash your afternoon tea.

I love those laid back roos. They have such a brilliant "No worries" body language. You just have to laugh.

  3. The grey Kangaroos do look very calm and relaxed. Sadly a female Black Swan which had just laid an egg was stoned to death by a group of heartless teens in Queens Park, Moonee Ponds, Victoria, her male partner took over and tried to hatch the egg but to no avail a sad loss indeed :-(.

  4. Marshall, Marie: Yes it was just lovely. Autumnal weather and the animals cruising happily.

Windsmoke: I saw that story about the thugs. It made me weep. Pointless. Vile.

  5. Great photos! I love that cockatiel and the kangaroos. Beautiful autumn colours. I wish that was there but the swans has the wrong colour, don't they?

  6. Cockatoo I meant. Silly of me because we have had cockatiels so really I should know. Instead I am showing my ignorance:)

  7. Lg: Not a problem. I knew what you meant and I sometimes think that we generally call them cockies to avoid such errors ourselves.

  8. Wonderful pics! I keep going back and looking at them again. And, yes, the kangaroos are so rather catlike in attitude--I love the looks on their faces. It must have been a great visit.

  9. I love the swans photos!
The thugs who stoned a swan should be stoned themselves.

  10. Cuteness! Roos, at Lake B-G? Wow, isn't it like, the lake in the middle of the city? Happy you had fun swanning about.

  11. Paper Chipmunk, River, Mitzi: It was a lovely, lovely outing. And yes, the lake is in the middle of town, but there are always roos about if you know where to look. And even more swans. And ducks. And moor hens. And bats.

  15. The things I miss about Canberra....! I was a little girl when the Lake was being dug and recall driving across what is now its base. Canberra has always been a beautiful city, though.

  16. I was there then too. Moved away, and came back when my father was unwell. You are right though, it is a beautiful city, almost all year. Not real fond of it in summer.
