Sunday Selections #155

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.  The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.

Like River, I generally run with a theme.  Our weather (finally) cooled down yesterday evening, after yet another day where it was tipping 40.  It is still hotter than I like (though all of summer is hotter than I like) but much, much better.  And I so hope that the bushfires are brought completely under control.

While sweltering, as well as Antarctica photos I drooled over these ones of the Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil.  I saw them after I went to Antarctica - and loved them.  Mind you, while it looks cool and refreshing there it wasn't.  The temperatures were high and the humidity hovered between 95 and 98 per cent.  Vile.

Just the same, they were beautiful.  And do look cool and refreshing.

  1. Thankfully by now you should be experiencing a cool change, EC...and not before time, I say. Terrible images on the news about all the devastating bush fires. Our temps are predicted to increase this coming week, but not to heights the southern areas experienced. I'll be glad when summer is over.

Have a good week, EC...I do hope all is well with you and yours. :)

    1. Lee: It is better today, but NOT what I consider a cool change. We are still heading for the mid 30s. Later in the week will be better (for a while).
The fires are a major worry. I understand that most of them are now contained, but the damage is frightening. Particularly to our wildlife.

  5. Wow! It puts Niagara Falls to shame. Sadly, with Niagara Falls it has been taken over commercially and it is just a tourist town now. Though it is beautiful, it lacks all the natural beauty around it. The only thing around it is cement and buildings.

    1. Birdie: There is some commercial activity around Iguazu - but not a lot. For which I was grateful.

  9. Oh my, EC, they are incredible! How perfectly exciting! It would be worth the humidity to witness such majesty. Nature at her awesome, and terrifying, best.
I am very drawn to waterfalls. I find them absolutely mesmerising. I'm sure they'd be the end of me, as I'd always get too, too close.
I'd love to visit the world's largest waterfall – Africa's Victoria Falls. Not sure if my thudding heart would be able to stand it if I was there though :)

    1. Vicki: I love water, and waterfalls and am very glad I went - and wouldn't go back. I was very grateful when the spray blew back over me - and went on a boat trip to the base of one of them. I would have been saturated - except that I was already.

  10. They certainly are beautiful, but 98% humidity? I'd be a puddle on the ground after 5 minutes.

    1. River: I did a five kilometre loop walk. And when I got back literally had to wring out my clothing. And the moisture owed a lot more to perspiration than to the spray. They WERE beautiful though.

  12. They do look absolutely stunning! You have some great shots of your travels.
In spite of Birdie's comment above, I enjoyed visiting Niagara Falls. Yes, they are touristy and commercialised, but they were still spectacular. Perhaps it helped that we were visiting them from the Canadian side. And it was quite a few years ago.

You must all be crispy critters over there - glad to hear it has cooled slightly. I am a great tennis fan and usually try to watch as much of the Australian Open as I can; I couldn't believe the temperatures the commentators were talking about!!

Sit in the shade with an iced drink and read a good book :)

  19. Those falls are a sheer delight and, forgive me my ignorance, I had never heard of them. I imagine it would be hot and steamy in that part of the world and not 'our' type of weather at all.
I am so glad it has cooled down somewhat but not quite enough for you to feel comfortable. I hope the MS has settled a little with the cool change.
We are in for a week or more of hot weather but then this is Perth. 39ºC today and lots more 30ºs on the way.
I feel so for the people who have lost their homes. I know they are only brick and mortar but its the little things that are lost along with the house and I worry so much always about pets, livestock and the wild creatures.

  28. What a magnificent waterfall and doesn't it look cool and refreshing. Just the tonic for those baking hot summer days you've been experiencing. I think I'll give the humidity a miss, though. I used to find Sydney unbearable and couldn't wait to get home to Adelaide's dry heat. I imagine that I'd melt in to a big puddle in that humidity.

I've seen Iguazu Falls in Brazil (you may know it from the film "The Mission"). Not as high as these falls, but absolutely breathtaking and unbelievably LOUD. I wasn't fully prepared for the noise, although if I'd used my brains I ought to have known it would be noisy. The power and majesty in the falls is heart stopping.

I hope the images kept you cool today. I hear relief is on the way in the form of a cool change. Here it's snowing and blowing an Arctic gale, but it's so pretty that I can't help but smile. I think it's far easier to rug up in the cold weather than to try and stay cool in the heat, so I don't envy you at all.

    1. Marie: These are Iguazu Falls - but mostly from the Argentine side. An incredible place - and yes deafening.
It takes a lot before I feel the cold and yes, it is so much easier to get warm (and stay warm) than the opposite. And sleeping in the cool is much, much easier too.

    2. I must be blind! I thought that I read these were the Angel Falls which I haven't seen. I was on the Brazilian side at their enormous tourist centre, sweating like the proverbial pig. Now I see what you quote as the humidity level, it's no wonder! I loved "Devil's Throat" falls the best, but honestly it was just incredible.

      Delete
    3. Marie: Devil's Throat was incredible wasn't it? It was all very beautiful - unlike my soggy self with the perspiration pouring off me - including running through my eyebrows and into my eyes. NOT a cherished memory.

  29. Beautiful...and yes, steamy. The rainforests are glorious to look at but impossible to reconcile the heat index with the vision of shade and water. I once took a skyride through a similar environment in Panama. The panorama can be breathtaking!
