Sunday Selections #179

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files.

The meme is now continued by River at Drifting through life.  The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to River.

Like River I usually run with a theme.  This week has been busy, though saying that, I don't quite know what made it so busy.  I seemed to be constantly on the go, but don't have a lot to show for it.

So I am returning to my birdy obsession this week.   As always, click to embiggen.

Firstly corellas,

Then, on a chilly foggy morning the first of the King Parrots came to visit.  They have been away in the hills over summer, bringing up their families.  I hope we see many, many more of them.   This is a female - the male King Parrot has an orange head - and an orange tinge to its beak.

And finishing with a cockatoo, with his crest raised as he inspected me.

  2. You have such amazing birds come visit you.
Dig the last two shots. That deep blue sky really makes the bird pop out of the photo.

  5. Not only beautiful birds, but a beautiful cloudless blue sky in the last two shots! Love them.

  6. Lovely shots- but I favor the last two best- kingly crown- fabulous against the blue sky!

    1. Terri @ Backward B Ranch: The cockatoos raise their crests each time they land, or if they are curious about what is going on. And this bird certainly watches us with as much interest as we watch him.

  7. Wonderful photos EC, and in the parrot world the King parrot is my all time favourite. I had some wonderful experiences with these placid beautiful birds in the Hunter Valley.

    1. Rose ~ from Oz: Last year we had a pair of King Parrots which would eat from our hands. I hope they come back this year. I love them - but also the crimsons, the Eastern rosellas and the superb parrot. Well, all of them really.

  9. Dear EC
What fabulous birds - they make our sparrows look positively commonplace!
    Lovely photos.
    Best wishes

    1. Ellie Foster: I do love our birds - but the sparrows have a lot of charm too. More subtle, but definitely there.

  10. Beautiful birds. We get the cockatoos, the black as well as the white, and king parrots up here, along with a couple of varieties of rosellas. All are so great.

Have a good week, EC. May you soar with the birds...metaphorically-speaking, of course! :)

    1. Lee: We rarely get the black cockies here. And, when we do it is a sign that things are tough for them. So I try not to rejoice when I see them.
And I would love to be able to soar with the birds - literally and metaphorically.

  11. The colors on that King Parrot are extraordinary! Love the crest raised on the cockatoo - and gorgeous blue sky! Did Jazz and Jewel have a chance to chatter at the visitors?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. River Fairchild: Jewel is an ambitious cat, and would love a cockatoo to call her own - despite them being as big as she is. And yes, the cats spend at least as much time watching the birds as we do.

    1. Bookie: I hope she (and her extended family) will be here for Christmas. Though they brighten any day when they arrive.

  13. We've heard and seen galahs lately, though they are in the minority here.

    1. dinahmow: Galahs are a regular here - and you get birds I envy. This morning I heard, but did not see, a gang-gang. A bird I would love to photograph. Our state bird, and I see them once every few years. If that.

  15. You don't see too many King Parrots about, but they are quite spectacular looking birds. Off to see River's black cockies now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Andrew: They are not brave birds. They are bigger than the crimson rosellas - but give way to the rosellas (and the cockies and the corellas) every time. And River's black cockie is a charmer - and I lust after some of her other birds too.

  16. Oh man, I can SO RELATE to your observation about not knowing what is making busy days and weeks busy, and about always being on the go but having little to show for it. I figure I must just be squandering more of my time than I think, but honestly I wonder if it isn't that so much of how I spend my time I just have to keep doing over and over and over (mowing lawns, running errands, doing laundry, doing dishes, cooking meals, answering emails, etc etc) - makes it hard to feel that elusive sense of accomplishment!

Your bird friends are, as ever, delightful and gorgeous. I am especially struck by the King Parrot - what a perfect background to showcase his gorgeous colors! At first I thought you had snow there! :-) (It hit 99ºF here today - snow actually sounds good, and so does cool and foggy!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Laloofah: We have had a little snow - nearby at any rate. A slight dusting of icing on the nearby hills. Magic.
And I do love our birds - and the King Parrot was particularly welcome. Her partner was here with her this morning too.

  17. G'day Sue,

Corellas, you tell us. I would never have known if you hadn't shown. King Parrot is a girl. Now my head's in a whirl. And you end it with a cock or two, um cockatoo, yes you do.

    Gary :)

  19. A "birdy obsession" is a very good kind of obsession to have :)

I envy your corellas and galahs, as they don't come to the valley.
"Our" red rosellas and kings come often in the cold weather for a energy seed boost, and our large family of white cockies are never far away.

The world is a better place when beautiful birds fly throughout the neighbourhood and stop by for a visit.

    1. Vicki: I am certainly not ashamed of my birdie obsession. Hours of pleasure. And learning. And laughter.

  23. I love the crested cockatoo. He reminds me of the one my mum had, all alone in her biggest aviary. I much prefer them free though.

    Replies
    1. River: My mother had a cockatoo in an aviary (for a while) as well. He chewed his way out and lived the rest of his life free - which is right and proper.

  26. To me, as a swede, it's like some kind of novel or wonderland to have these birds in their garden. Here, these are exotic birds you see in a zoo or a pet shop =)

    1. CrimsonAnna: Sadly we see them (or most of them) in pet shops here. I much prefer seeing them flying free. A caged bird always seems sad to me.

  27. i took the kids for a drive to Bowral this week, we got pies to eat at the park and a King Parrot or two kept an eye on us. (Keaghan swears it was a pair, I could only see one) It was nice to see them on what was by then a pretty grim afternoon
