This
meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her
to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now
Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a
movable feast.
Essentially
the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice
of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we
do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a
poem, or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the
prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.
Some
of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on
their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible
joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
The prompts will be here this month but are provided by Margaret Adamson, and her friend Sue Fulcher. The prompts will also include photographs taken by Margaret's friend Bill Dodd.
Sadly this will be the last month Margaret and her friends provide us the prompts. Margaret's and Sue's health has got in the way and forced them to make decisions about where to devote their energies. I thank them, and will miss them.
This week's prompts are phrases:
- An arm and a leg
And/or
- Barking up the wrong tree
Have fun.
Thank you so much to all those who listened to my pleas and agreed to provide the prompts next year. We now have the year filled in, and I will put up a post later showing what it looks like - and seeking confirmation that the dates work for everyone. Mind you, some people are filling multiple months, which worries me a little. If any of them want to step back, please let me know.
This tree will cost me an arm and a leg, and it's not even the right one!
ReplyDeleteHa...ok, well, I tried...😂
Sandi: I love it - and thank you for joining us.
DeleteNice!
DeleteVery succinct!
DeleteFunny!
DeleteNice try. ;-)
DeleteI almost lost an arm and a leg when the chainsaw slipped and as it turns out, I was barking up the wrong tree anyway.
ReplyDeleteMike: Ouch. I thought when I prepared this post that these phrases would suit you - and I was right.
DeleteIt never rains but it pours!
DeleteBig ouch.
DeleteGrandpa, when he was out helping his father-in-law take down a tree, got hit in the knee when the chain saw slipped. He didn't lose the leg, but true to form, as a doctor, he went to the local small town ER and helped the doc there sew up his leg.
Another good one.
DeleteYay - certainly can't really compete with the two above ... congratulations to Sandi and Mike ...
ReplyDelete... but am glad you've been able to fill the word slots for next year ... cheers Hilary
Hilary Melton-Butcher: They are fun takes aren't they? And it is wonderful to have filled in next year's prompts so easily.
DeleteWOOF, WOOF, WOOF, WOOF!!!!
ReplyDeleteOk Major I hear you. I do hope you aren’t barking up the wrong tree again. Last time you woke me (and the neighbourhood) it was Princess FurrryBottom you had treed. I thought her owner was going to have my guts for garters over that one.
GOOD BOY. You are a VERY GOOD BOY!!!! This time you have done it. You have caught him. Being found up that tree with his swag is all the evidence I need to put away Dick Dastardly for months. You can’t have his arm and a leg as a reward – but you will get a juicy bone. A very juicy bone. And I might get a promotion.
Hooray for catching the bad guy!
DeleteWell done!
DeleteLove,
Janie
Really clever take on the two prompts. Love how you used these in a completely unique way.
DeleteOh, you got him! lovely.
DeleteWell done EC - a fun take ... cheers Hilary
DeleteHa! This prompt has brought out the humor in everyone.
DeleteJust imagine: An arm and a leg barking up a tree which turns out to be the wrong one.
ReplyDeleteSurreal...
DeleteSean Jeating: Now I have an image in my head of a disembodied limbs climbing a tree...
DeleteThis is getting to be easy fun, isn't it?
DeleteThis is how my mind works. I enjoy meetings of the surreal and the whimsical.
DeleteHmmm, an interesting visual, if you ask me.
DeleteA right good yarn EC. Love the imagery.

DeleteFirst a google translation:
I was running along the road accompanied by my faithful dog. Increasingly enthusiastic, I was picking up speed, but unfortunately I did not see the stone on the road and I tripped over it. My fall occurred to the right side and the blow mostly fell, on the right leg and arm.
I was barely able to get up, without anyone's help. At that precise moment not a soul passed by the road.
When my dog saw what happened, he did not leave my side.
To recover I decided to rest on a large trunk of a tree, which was cut on the side of the road and under the protective shade of another large tree.
Suddenly a noise made my dog bark at the tree that sheltered us ... later we realized that he had barked at the wrong tree. The noise was from a pineapple, which had just fallen to the ground and was from the tree that was next to it and whose branches were very close.
That is my little contribution and what just occurred to me.
Thank you so much for joining us. I do like your use of the phrases and hope that your injuries are not severe.
I'm glad your dog stayed by your side even though he barked at the wrong tree.
DeleteI enjoyed this story of your faithful dog.
DeleteI can read a little Spanish, but I did cheat and read the English translation. :-)
Well done! It sounds like you have a very good dog.
DeleteNicely done. I fell on the ice one time and my dog ran away so this was refreshing :)

You're barking the wrong tree if you think I'll pay an arm and a leg for that unsatisfactory job.
ReplyDeleteJulia
Julia: Short and to the point. Sadly too many companies do expect just that.
DeleteIt's what not only your countrymen, f.e. Kellogg's staff, are shouting these days.
DeleteThe story of so many lives now, being expected to pay for bad service and unsatisfactory goods.
DeleteNice!
DeleteSounds like there will be some expensive dog stories!
ReplyDeleteI used the second prompt to create a monody for Benjamin, the last Thylocine.

Okay, i'm on it.
ReplyDeleteMy post will be over here.

She was getting sick of these meetings. As if she didn’t have enough of this stultifying office, there were these weekly meetings to attend. Ordered by William Scraggs, Supreme Leader. Not Supreme Leader of course but Chairman of the Board.
That man came with a machine gun loaded up with cliches, tropes and memes and only paid attention to those who responded in kind. She’d jotted down a few fresh ones in preparation for the meeting, so she wouldn’t be ignored. His approval meant an annual raise and a small bonus.
Today she was armed and firing back at him.
“I’d give an arm and a leg,” he now said, “If someone could sort out our German problem.”
She raised her hand “Sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees sir, I will work on it.”
He nodded approvingly as the others glared at her.
He rambled on and threw another volley out.
“I’d hate to think we were barking up the wrong tree with the UK.”
She flung her hand in the air
“We need to set our sails in another direction for the UK business sir, I’ll see to it!”
He beamed at her. She’d cracked the code.

Very good!
DeleteLove,
Janie
Sometimes you have to play the game. Excellent story!
DeleteSupposedly a nice little story 'out of your sewing-basket', as a German would say. ;-)
DeleteBrilliant, Wisewebwoman.
DeleteJulia
Hoist by his own petard, lovely story.
DeleteI love all the entries above me. I'll see what I can come up with by Friday.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbors dog is constantly barking up the wrong tree or window in our case! If it weren't so cold outside he would get a nice cold shower at 2 A.M. On the other hand his owners must think the toys we keep throwing over the fence for him don't really cost an arm and a leg! I sure enjoyed reading everything here. I appreciate all of you and your talents.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbor's dog barks a lot, too. They are on the other side of the house and can't hear her, but it's right under our window. We've never tried throwing toys to see if it would keep her quiet, i might have to do that.
DeleteI hope that someday, he'll bark up the right tree.
DeleteJulia
I really think you should go an purchases a lounge suit, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg...
ReplyDeleteYes, it's short EC..:) like short ones.
Succinct is good.
DeleteThis might be a good idea.
DeleteJulia
I am sorry but at the moment I am unable to reply to comments.
ReplyDeleteI have read and loved all of our takes on Margaret's prompts.
Hm, this is a post to test the reply button.
DeleteThis happens to me too, and comments on other blogs get lost in the Twisting Nether. Sigh.
DeleteOrnery Owl: I liked your poem - but cannot comment on any blog with embedded comments at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI joined you here - thank you for the memories...
ReplyDeleteBREAKING NEWS by Granny Annie
ReplyDeleteThe members of the forestry service were task to remove the bark from a small group of trees. They had the use of a barking drum to get the work done. One of the workers wandered out of the designated area and they found he was barking up the wrong tree. They had not choice but to cut down this tree. The tree fell and a bundle bounced out. The workers carefully opened the bundle and inside they found terrifying human remains of an arm and a leg.
That is a most scary news headline!
DeleteHahaha, I'm laughing my head off, never mind the arm and the leg, hahaha.
DeleteJulia
Ha ha ha, 'never mind the arm and the leg'.
DeleteOh my gosh. I can respond!
ReplyDeleteWhy are visitors so lamentably discombobulated … there are plenty of signs up directing everyone … after all they were only asked to leave their leg-wear and their fire-arms at the door – there really was no need for those limbs to be cut off … a very strange interpretation of simple instructions – take your shoes and gloves off … Really – where were people born. We enjoy our visitors here … we don't need to leave a bloody mess for our cleaners to sort out. Heaven help us all …
ReplyDeleteCheers EC ... a silly take on the prompt. Hilary
<B it!
DeleteSome people are just too literal!
DeleteVery clever!
DeleteAs an IT Admin, it's not uncommon to bark up the wrong tree while troubleshooting elusive issues. But alas, a sacrifice of an arm and a leg to the Technology Gods will often appease them and allow functionality again.
ReplyDeleteAs an IT idiot, i salute you that you can make any kind of sense at all out of these issues!
DeleteGood one, Sonya:)
DeleteSounds as if His Technoholiness as soon as the next trouble is to shoot will get the second arm and the second leg sacrificed.
DeleteMy commenting woes continue. I cannot comment on blogs where the comments are embedded (as they are here) where I can (sometimes) comment but cannot reply to comments. Thank you so much to everyone who participated.
ReplyDeleteAre you still with Windows7? That might be part of the problem, or even the whole of it.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I have been with Windows 10 for a long time now. And have more problems than I ever did with Windows 7. Sometimes my comments take, sometimes they don't.
DeleteI have Windows 7 still and have the same problems, but in a lesser measure than EC. I think the problem is with the blogging platforms, not local.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnd without typos.
ReplyDeleteI was right, I could not stop writing. Here's my post: WfW
I have issues with blogger at times. A little while ago I couldn't comment unless I checked the box above the publish button. I didn't realize I wasn't making any comments for the longest time. Now it's gone back to normal. Congrats on your story being published. Big applaud from me and a hug for a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteDeniseinVA: Thank you. My commenting issues are better than they were, but have not gone. I also resent proving I am not a robot.
DeleteI don't say "an arm and a leg" a lot but I find myself saying "you're barking up the wrong tree" a lot, and not just to my dog, haha!
ReplyDeleteHope that you are having a good weekend :) Thankfully the rain has stopped here.
Away From The Blue
Mica: Thank you. I use both phrases. It is still raining here. By the bucket load.
DeleteThank you all for coming up with some funny stories as well as scary ones. Next week you will have a different sort of challenge that I think you might have to use your imagination even more so I am looking forward to reading all your wonderful stories. Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe
ReplyDeleteBuona serata.
