This
meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her
to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now
Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a
movable feast.
Essentially
the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice
of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do
with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a poem,
or treating them with ignore... We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.
Some
of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on
their own blog. I would really like it if as many people as possible
joined into this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
This week's prompts are:
- Brand
- Veered
- Afternoon
- Impromptu
- Holiday
- Unaware
- Companion
- History
- Paintings
- Solace
As always, have fun.
Hi EC - thanks for these interesting words ... I'l be back to comment perhaps tomorrow if not Thursday ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDelete"I was thinking about the Missing Green brand – the programmers couldn't have been unaware of that colour – perhaps the impromptu afternoon holiday put them off their course – they'd veered completely away.
My companion who studied History of Art – she loved paintings … and was most definitely bemused by the marketeers being unaware that that colour of green was missing.
Really … I need some solace – I think I'll take a glass of
Vinho Verde into the garden to clear my head … before I have a conversation about Missing Green."
Hilary Melton-Butcher: I really, really hope you get answers tomorrow. Love your piece and hope that Missing Green can be tracked down.
DeleteThanks EC - I'm sure all will be fine - I'm positive. Vinho Verde will suit me tomorrow! Cheers H xo
DeleteWonderful! Is Vinho Verde a legitimate vineyard brand?
DeleteYes Cindi - it is ... a very known variety ... young wine ... cheers H
DeleteMy daughter discovered Vinho Verde in Portugal a few years ago, and we have been quaffing it ever since.
DeleteSee what you have done! Now I want some vino verde.
DeleteNicely done!
DeleteI may have to look for it online!
DeleteIt's morning here and now I want a glass of wine!
DeleteLOL. Purrfect, Hils. I'll join you in the garden for a glass of that Vinho Verde:) Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
DeleteI bet there will be some missing green paintings...
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh: Perhaps but the contributors always surprise me with their chosen use of the prompts.
DeleteI love that color.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
rsrue: It is great isn't it?
DeleteWorking on it while baby tending, but she has to nap sometime!
ReplyDeletemessymimi: Happy baby tending. As always I look forward to seeing your creation.
DeleteMine is over here.
Deleteloved it MessyMimi!

Adrianne had a history of looking for solace in inappropriate places, often expensive places. Faced with bills she couldn’t meet she rushed out and bought brand-new clothing, booked impromptu holidays with the companion of the day, or purchased yet more expensive paintings to hang on her over decorated walls.
ReplyDeleteShe wasn’t unaware that this kind of solace was temporary at best, or of the irony of spending to comfort herself about financial woes, but couldn’t/wouldn’t see another way.
It was a rare afternoon at home that led to her epiphany. She had nowhere she needed to go and no one she needed to impress. She sat outside, marveling at the bird song and bathed in the green glow from the surrounding trees. That green glow had been missing from her life and brought her comfort. With that simple and profound realisation she veered away from purchased solace towards a cheaper and more powerful replacement.
Hi EC .. yes definitely a good moral tale ... stop before it gets totally out of hand - when she'd be green in the gaol. Cheers Hilary
DeleteI really love this ... and can really relate.
DeleteAnother excellent story this week EC and I'm glad Adrianne had her epiphany.
DeleteI’m glad that she woke up to reality. I hope she is able to pay off all her accumulated debt.,
DeleteLessons to be learned in this!
DeleteUna bona llisó apresa.
DeleteLa natura és més que suficient per trobar-hi pau i a més és gratis. ;-)
Aferradetes, Sue.
I hope it sticks and she's able to dig out of debt. Good story!
DeleteYay! I'm glad she saw the natural light:) Well done, EC. Well done.
DeleteSandra sandracox.blogspot.com
Wonderful use of the words and wonderful wake up for Adrianne.
DeleteMine is published on my blog here.
ReplyDeleteCindi: I have read it and applauded. More please.
DeleteAs quickly as I can!
DeleteGeraldine was completely unaware of our feelings for her, or she never would have invited us to another impromptu gathering yesterday afternoon. This time to meet her soon to be traveling companion.
ReplyDeleteAfter a few minutes of idle conversations and refreshments, she skillfully veered all talk to their upcoming trip.
Everything out of her mouth was holiday this, or history that, or paintings, or sculptures or whatever other oneupmanship she could possibly manufacture to brag about to those of us "unlucky" enough to have not been invited to tag along on her journey.
And it was not like this was a brand new development. It happened before every single trip she took.
Though she always hoped for it, the missing green eyed monster never reared it's ugly head at her events.
Our solace? Knowing her traveling companions were always paid, and she could never get the same one to go anywhere more than once.
Anne in the kitchen: Brilliantly told. I can just see the totally unlikeable Geraldine and am not surprised that even her paid companions cannot face a revisit.
Deletea fabulous use of the prompts! I really loved it!
DeleteI like this and can see why Geraldine needs a new travel companion every time.
DeleteHi Anne in the Kitchen - yes I too can see the nuisance woman she usually is... too much money, so demanding 'I' time ... ghastly ... my solace would be to never see her again - yet then one would miss 'the fun' and tales ... well done - cheers Hilary
DeleteI love the bite at the end!
DeleteOnce bitten...
DeleteExcellent use of the prompts. We all know a Geraldine, don't we.
Deletethecontemplativecat here.
ReplyDeleteJames made a choice to do something impromptu, just off the cuff. Tiffanee always moaned about him being so predictable. So, I’ll show her, James decided.
The local historical holidays held in their town of Brand, Missouri, were insane. Annual Celebration of Composting? Yearly Harvesting of Brussels Sprouts? Slopping the Pigs Race? Good stuff.
James decided that this year he and his dim companions would create a new product line: the largest sound maker known. They stole the cannon from behind the barn scrubbing it inside and out. In the dark of night, they rolled it over to the center park and set it all up.
James installed the fuse and black powder taken from Grandad’s old double barrel shotgun shells. It took hours, but the rest of the crew were rounding up odd items for the projectile.
Odd stuff, indeed. When afternoon came about, the community eyed James’ creation skeptically. But they gave him the okay to shoot it off. With the barrel tilted at a 50-deg. angle, they fired it off. The barrel belched
Instead of being a glorious showing of colors and toys, the cannon exploded, and all were covered with the stuff from within…Hair curlers, marshmallows, mismatched socks, ping pong balls, old shoes, strips of crepe paper, Christmas decorations, and other odd stuff.
James and his crew slowly backed away and took off to quieter places. Tiffanee had assorted underpants on her head and screeched “James! We are so done.”
Not what James intended; it was not predictable but was disastrous.
Susan Kane: I love it. Poor James obviously got a tad carried away. I hope his next true love is as unconventual as he is.
DeleteGreat story! Very funny.
DeleteI have an image...!
DeleteWhy is predictable a bad thing? Nicely told story!
Deletelaughing! This is a "Hey Bubba, hold my beer!" kind of story!
DeleteI love this!
DeleteOh dear! What a shemozzle! James tried too hard and went too far.
ReplyDeleteI have noted the words in my notebook, but can't promise a story this week. I have my second cataract surgery at 7am tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteRiver: I hope it goes really, really well.
Deletethecontemplativecat here. The surgery is easy and quick. I had both eyes cataracts removed. Now I don't wear my glasses. But I was told that I would need reading glasses.
DeleteI love that missing green! So pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk: Charlotte (MotherOwl)'s colours are often great.
DeleteI have a soft spot for greens. Wearing that on my head right now and I have an Annie Sloan green that is lovely too. Just a fun thing, green.
DeleteThe Happy Whisk: Green, in all its myriad shades is probably my favourite colour.
DeleteDisastrous to say the least ... exploding cannon full of detritus ... I'm glad I wasn't there ... well done - a different tale - cheers
ReplyDeleteWell done to all.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D: Thank you.
DeleteMine is here
ReplyDeleteJ Cosmo Newbery: I have read it and am still thinking about it.
DeleteVery thought provoking and well done!
DeleteHe knew that when his BRAND new car VEERED off the road without apparent reason that it was not going to be a good AFTERNOON. And it had started so well; an IMPROMPTU lunch with Julie; tentative plans for the HOLIDAYS. He had been UNAWARE of her love of HISTORY and PAINTINGS and, if truth be known, he really felt inadequate when it came to discussions of those topics. He felt he was a good COMPANION, but would that be enough? He couldn’t decide whether she had been genuinely enthusiastic or merely polite. Suddenly, his phone beeped that a message was awaiting him. It was from Julie to let him know that she had enjoyed lunch and looked forward to exploring museums and art galleries with him. There was great SOLACE in that, and it didn’t even seem to matter that his car was in the ditch. It would be a good afternoon, after all.
ReplyDeleteDavid M. Gascoigne: How quickly an afternoon can turn around... Well done.
DeleteUp and down and back up again, you got a lot of good mileage out of these words.
DeleteWonderful use of the prompts!
DeleteHi David - very clever ... so so true probably ... cars are having minds of their own at times - my brother's just swapped his for 'a better model' he hopes. While our personal interests can be challenging when we're with people and especially starting out in life. Sounds like it could be a good time ahead for them both ... interesting storyline - love it ... cheers Hilary
DeleteI think this is the perfect making lemonade out of lemons tale.
DeleteExcellent, David. I truly enjoyed this:) Sandra sandracox.blogspot.com
DeleteThe first thing that comes to mind when you say “missing green” is living in Arizona. I moved there with my parents when I was almost 15, and immediately thought “Where are all the grass and trees?” I lived there for nine years and moved to Houston when I was almost 24 and was just in love with the amount of green here. Also when I was 17, my mom and I went to Greece to sell inherited land. On the way home, the plane refueled in Shannon, Ireland. As we landed, I just fell in love with the amount of green- probably as a result of having lived in the desert for two years at the time. But Ireland is beautiful, and I’d love to actually visit Shannon again someday. We didn’t even get off the plane :’(
ReplyDeleteAs a swamp dweller (south Louisiana is just one big swamp, really), I can't imagine living in a desert with so little green around me.
DeleteI have lived in the deserts of southern California, central Texas, and Arizona and have to say that Arizona does have the most beautiful desert in the country. Then to the Florida panhandle and Gulf of MEXICO, north to the shores of Lake Superior, and now along the Appalachian Mountains. No matter where I go, I think that there is a beauty everywhere. Who knew tumbleweeds actually have flowers in the spring?
DeleteDanielle: I hear you. In 2004 I went to Antarctica, a long held dream. It was gob smackingly beautiful but how I missed the green of trees. And grass.
DeleteHi Danielle - deserts are beautiful too ... but like you I craved the green green grass of home - England! I agree though Ireland is beautiful and a wonderful country to visit - if you get a chance. Cheers Hilary
DeleteOn this day the green outside my window is almost overwhelming. I love it, but it means a ton of yard work is in store.
DeleteVENTANA DE FOTO: I love Juan and Pedro's stories - and that they have both been successful in their chosen fields. Long may their friendship continue.
DeleteMagnífica historia, Antonia.
DeleteOn an impromptu holiday afternoon, we veered into a store looking for a particular brand of crayons but it was missing green.
ReplyDeleteMike: I do hope there were yellow and blue crayons...
DeleteMike:

What a wonderful tradition this meme has become! It's such a creative way to keep the writing spirit alive, especially with prompts that inspire diverse interpretations. The "Missing Green" color for April is a perfect choice—it brings to mind so many vivid possibilities, from nature’s renewal to the longing for spring’s vibrant colors. It's great that you’ve picked it up and are continuing the fun, encouraging so many to engage and support each other. I look forward to seeing what everyone creates this month!
ReplyDeleteMELODY JACOB: Thank you. It really is a fun meme and I love the different directions that the prompts take us on.
