Sunday Selections #786

Sunday Selections was originally brought to us by Kim, of Frogpondsrock, as an ongoing meme where participants could post previously unused photos languishing in their files. Huge thanks to Cie who gave me this wonderful Sunday Selections image.

The meme was then continued by River at Drifting through life.  Sadly she has now stepped aside (though she will join us some weeks), and I have accepted the mantle.

The rules are so simple as to be almost non-existent.  Post some photos under the title Sunday Selections and link back to me. Clicking on any of the photos will make them embiggen.

I usually run with a theme.  A few weeks ago among other things I posted a photo of Odie (here) where I don't want him to go.  He was far too close to the vintage glass paperweights that Cj spotted.

I first gave himself a paperweight for his birthday a number of years ago.  He liked it so much that it has become a tradition that he should receive one.  Here are some of them.

I hope you find colour and beauty in your week too.

  1. I agree with Odie those paperweights are amazing. I could sit and gaze at each one just for the shapes and colors alone. I hope you have a great new week ahead.

  2. River Fairchild - Those are beautiful and what a wonderful tradition. At least you don’t have to struggle with the question of what to get him each year, only which one … which is probably a struggle in itself. :-)
I hope your weather is pleasant and that summer doesn’t come galloping at you too soon like it did for the northern half of the globe this year. I spent the morning trying to wade through my weeds in the blazing sun. Hugs to you, my dear friend, and wishes for a restful-ish week ahead.

    1. River Fairchild: Which one can indeed be a challenge. Our local glassworks runs classes in how to make them and if I coped better with heat and my hands didn't shake so much I would sign up in a heartbeat. Be careful. On blazing days I let the weeds rest - and dammit they cope better with the heat than I do, and many of the plants I want to grow.

  3. A very nice presentation, I think so.

A hug, and for those landscapes and friends.

  4. love paperweights and just think someone actually made those with molten glass. We have had rain, then hot, and now rain again all summer long but I can't complain as our watering chores were very minimized. Hope you have a mild summer as we have.

    1. Linda Starr: I am surprised you have had a mild summer. So many places in your country have not. I adore glass work and fortunately so does himself.

  6. Dear EC
They are beautiful and remind me a bit of your frost bubbles! Odie just wants to look at them more closely(!) Why do cats always seem to be just where you don't want them?
Have a good week and look after yourself
    Best wishes

    1. roentare: It is always good to support local artists. Some of these fall into that category and others are old and I have no idea where they were made or by whom.

  13. I love paperweights. They are exquisite glass. I seldom came across such glass artists at my shows, and their weights cost a lot of money. I managed to collect only three or four. The paperweights you have collected for Himself are incredible works.

    1. Joanne Noragon: Ever since I was a child and watched a glass blower at my father's work I have been fascinated by glass. And some work is incredibly beautiful. It can be expensive but I have had some very lucky buys.

  14. They are wonderful. I love coloured glass. But wouldn't there be an expectation that each year's weight will be better than the previous years.

    1. Andrew: I hope not. I really hope not. And it is definitely a matter of taste.

  15. They are all beautiful and so is the tradition. I have one glass paperweight, which I found years ago, I don't remember exactly where, but it wasn't expensive, so maybe a thrift store. It has a yellow petalled flower with green leaves and tiny stamens. I'll take a photo and show it next week. It's safely out of Lola's reach and has survived a LOT of house moves.

  21. I can't go past the fuschia colour on the second one. I've never heard of anyone collecting paper weights before but I really like the way it's a treasured tradition, a little more special than a standard collection (though that might be insulting to collectors!)

  26. Beauties! They are incredible! Do you get them from local artists? While looking at them, for some reason I had to think of the frozen bubbles you sometimes make in the winter. Call me crazy, but I do see a likeness...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Carola Bartz: You are the second to compare them to frozen bubbles (which don't look like they will happen this year). When I can I do get them from local artists but some are second hand (at least) and I have no idea of their provenance.

  28. The paperweights are beautiful! I took a short glass-blowing course and loved it; and although I didn't create anything nearly as nice as your paperweights, I'm still unreasonably pleased by my (slightly-deformed) glass starfish with swirls of green and blue throughout. Glass is such a fascinating material - sometimes even "mistakes" turn out to be stunning.

    Replies
    1. Diane Henders: As I said earlier if I coped with heat better and my hands shook less I would sign up for a glass-blowing course very quickly. I am sure you are pleased with your totally unique starfish. And I would love to see it.

  44. Lovely paperweights! We don't see many here; I don't know why that is. Now you have me wondering. We have paper, we have windy days, we have open windows . . . you'd think we would have seen a need for them. And, if not a need, then for their beauty alone. You've chosen well. I hope Odie just admires them and doesn't try to do the cat thing with them . . . thank you for this addition of beauty to my day and the question it raised for me to consider, dear friend!
